Sony to Target the Tablet Market?

On the back of the iPad launch and of course the media throng that followed Apple’s latest device one of Sony’s bosses has commented that Sony are interested in entering the tablet computer market with a device of its own. At a news conference in Tokyo Nobuyuki Oneda, Sony’s Chief Financial Officer, responded to a question about the Sony position on tablet computers by stating “that is a market we are also very interested in”.
The closest device Sony offers at the moment to the iPad is the Reader, a range of devices specially designed to hold eBooks for convenient reading. To produce an iPad like device Sony would have to combine elements from the Reader, VAIO computers and its Walkman range in order to compete effectively with Apple. It is existing knowledge from these markets however that could lead to the production of an impressive and market leading device, a fact reinforced by Mr Oneda who stated that Sony ”are confident we have the skills” to create such a product.
