Custom Laptops from Sony VAIO

The Sony VAIO Z Series represents the higher end of the VAIO range; first released in 2008 it has been an impressive addition to the VAIO family. Being extremely small as well as light it is marketed towards business users although leisure users that want a high performance laptop are equally well catered for.

For some time Sony has been offering the option to build your own laptop and the Z Series has also received the customisable treatment. Customers are given a range of choices when it comes to configuring their VAIO.

Technical options include a choice of processor, a range of hard drive sizes (in the Sony VAIO Z (V) Series these include hard discs of 320GB or 500GB storage whilst the Sony VAIO Z (X) Series offers solid state drives ranging from 128GB to 512GB of storage). Customers can also add more memory, choose to have a Blu-ray optical drive installed and add Wireless WAN for seamless connectivity. Finally, a choice of screens allowing customers to showcase High Definition media are included, customers can select either a 1600×900 pixel screen or the premium HD1080 screen that utilises 1920×1080 pixels.

It is not just technical aspects that can be included in the custom options for the VAIO Z. Particularly for business users, fingerprint recognition can be added to ensure that sensitive material is kept confidential and leisure customers can choose between a range of colours which include Carbon and Silver (all with a backlit keyboard).

Whilst the VAIO Z is one of the more premium Sony VAIO models, the chance to create custom laptops that include everything that a business or leisure user should ever need is likely to be a powerful lure for those who want control over the construction of their VAIO machine.

Custom Laptops from Sony VAIO

Regular readers will have seen the latest Sony E series VAIO notebooks that come in a range of funky colour combinations in a previous post. Now it seems that Sony is going to offer customers the chance to create their very own custom laptop, with a range of different modification options available on selected series’.

Labelled as “VAIO by you” custom options are available on CW, FW, SR, X, TT and Z series laptops to name a few. One of these options is laser engraving, customers will be able to personalise their VAIO notebook with a special message. Sony technicians will then etch a personal message onto the laptop, perfect for those who want a long lasting custom look that provides that truly individual touch.

As well as engraving, customers have a range of options including hardware and software variants. As a customer it will be possible to select from a range of different colours, from the regulation blacks through to soft pastels and more outlandish shades. For some models there are even options to have special finishes and different coloured lids. For those with a penchant for individualism, the CW series comes in light blue and yellow, colours exclusively available direct from Sony

Customers are also given the option to change hardware such as the hard drive and memory. Additionally customers can choose between DVD, Blu-ray player and Blu-ray writer optical drives as well as screen options to ensure your High Definition media is faithfully reproduced. Finally customers can decide on a range of software inclusions from Microsoft Office and MacAfee Anti Virus through to Adobe Creation and Photoshop Lightroom.

With so many options, from aesthetic considerations through to the physical make up of custom VAIO laptops, Sony seems to have realised that personal flair plays as much a part in the buying process as technical specifications.

Sony to Target the Tablet Market?

What a VAIO Slate PC might look like

On the back of the iPad launch and of course the media throng that followed Apple’s latest device one of Sony’s bosses has commented that Sony are interested in entering the tablet computer market with a device of its own. At a news conference in Tokyo Nobuyuki Oneda, Sony’s Chief Financial Officer, responded to a question about the Sony position on tablet computers by stating “that is a market we are also very interested in”.

The closest device Sony offers at the moment to the iPad is the Reader, a range of devices specially designed to hold eBooks for convenient reading. To produce an iPad like device Sony would have to combine elements from the Reader, VAIO computers and its Walkman range in order to compete effectively with Apple. It is existing knowledge from these markets however that could lead to the production of an impressive and market leading device, a fact reinforced by Mr Oneda who stated that Sony ”are confident we have the skills” to create such a product.

No actual future products were mentioned by Mr Oneda but if industry commentators are to be believed it will not be long before a Sony tablet is produced. Whatever impetus the iPad brings to the tablet market, Sony will want to have the products to take advantage of it. The CFO has certainly sparked interest in the subject professing that “it’s a space [the tablet market] we would like to be an active player in”.

Mr Oneda’s comments are likely to whet the appetites of Sony aficionados and technology journalists alike. If reports are to be believed we could be seeing a Sony tablet entering the market as early as October this year.

Sony Unveil New VAIO E Series Entry Level Laptop

The colourful new VAIO E Series by Sony

Sony unveiled the latest laptop in the VAIO family yesterday; the new E series. The E Series has been lined up as a replacement to the old NW Series and offers consumers an affordable VAIO laptop by Sony.

In terms of specs considering this is at the lower end of the Sony VAIO range the E series packs an impressive punch. An Intel Core i3 processor has been included as has an ATI Mobility Radeon 5000 series graphics module. Equipped with 500GB of hard disk and a HDMI output port as well as the numerous USB ports we come to expect from laptops today, effective connectivity is assured. There will be even be the option of a Blu Ray ROM drive to make the most of the 15.5 inch 1080p HD screen and an in-built webcam is also included.

One of the more impressive aspects of the new VAIO E Series is the funky range of colours it will be available in. As always there is the rather traditional colours such as brown, gun metal and white but in addition contemporary colours with outlandish names such as “Caribbean Green”, “Hibiscus Pink”, “Lava Black” and “Iridescent Blue” have been included to bring a sense of style and theatre to the E Series range. Consumers also have the option to add special skins to the keyboard to achieve an individual look.

Mike Abery, the Senior Vice President of the Sony VAIO business group stated that “The E Series delivers contemporary cool designs at mainstream prices” showing that Sony are acutely aware that bringing stylistic appeal to its products at a cost effective price is now essential. Mr Abery reinforced this commitment to bringing fashionable laptops to the masses by commenting that “consumers will no longer have to sacrifice style for affordability”.

Style has certainly been a factor in the design of the VAIO E Series with some crazy colour combinations available. That said, if consumers want to stand out from the crowd with a laptop that screams individuality as well as technical prowess, then the E Series could become one of the more sought after models of VAIO.

Sony Brings Eco Friendly W Laptop to the Party

Sony VAIOs Eco driven laptop

Sony has once again showed their commitment to eco friendly principles with one of their latest laptops the Sony VAIO Eco VPC-W212AX. Most computer experts will remark that this new eco laptop is essentially the same VAIO W Netbook already released, however it is important to remember that this is less about features and more about the ethos behind the laptop that makes it eco friendly.

One of the major appeals of this laptop is its green credentials. The chassis, complete with its pearlescent glow is in fact manufactured from twenty percent recycled CD and DVD cases. The carry case on the other hand has been manufactured using spent drinks bottles made from PET plastic. Both show that waste from society can have practical uses in the world of consumer electronics. For those who want the specs the W series eco laptop boasts a 10.1 inch screen, an Intel Atom n450 CPU a gig of ram and a 250GB hard drive.

Equally impressive however is the fact that boxes for the laptop have been done away with completely, pointless packaging has been removed and the laptop is available in its case. The paper saving does not stop there however, the instructions for the eco laptop have been provided in a digital format with only a small pamphlet providing information on how to start up the device.

Priced the same as a normal W series netbook, Sony must be applauded for this offering that provides those with an eco conscience with a viable alternative at no extra cost. Hopefully this fine example of how electronics companies can make the most of recycled materials and reduce excess packaging will forge a path for others in the industry.

VAIO Gaming Laptops Go For Release

Sony have steadily been releasing news of their prestige VAIO autumn winter signature collection for some time now. It contains the very best that the VAIO brand has to offer and a host of notebooks perfect for consumers that want that little bit extra. The latest news of the signature collection is concerned with gaming laptops. Within the collection there are three notebooks that are perfect for gamers, the VAIO VGN-CW1FFX, the VAIO Nebula and the VAIO-FW590FFD.

We have already reported on the VAIO Nebula earlier in the month but it is now the VGN-CW1FFX that is impressing computing journalists. The technology within this VAIO laptop is bound to impress, from the humungous 320GB hard drive, to the impressive power of the 4GB DDR3 memory gamers are amply catered for. When this is combined with Sony’s impressive xBlack screen and an nVidia GeForce GT 230M graphics card, the visuals are bound to be impressive. A HDMI output for playing games in high definition and a built in DVD/CD burner make the VGN-CW1FFX an impressive piece of kit.

So far the VAIO signature collection has been impressive; so far the collection has combined sumptuous styling with massive power. Whilst there is no official release date or pricing information yet, it is certain that hardened gamers will be hotly anticipating these notebooks.

Sony has always been one for combining the aspects of entertainment with functionality. One of the latest releases from the company has been the VAIO VGP-BMS80, a laser Bluetooth mouse that has dual functioning properties. The VGP-BMS80 is not only perfect for use in the office when using a VAIO notebook or desktop PC, but also equally at home in the living room.

This little handheld device can be used as a tabletop mouse or for those who like to relax, a handheld control for the VAIO computer and even their PS3. This dual functionality means that users can operate the mouse on a hard surface, such as a desk or table, perfect for the home office or even when travelling. The other function means that the VGP-BMS80 can be used as a handheld remote control, with the ability to control media presentations on a laptop, for web surfing and music control. Additionally PS3 functionality means that the mouse works seamlessly with the PS3’s XMB control system, perfect for viewing movies, photographs and on-demand television.

Immerse Yourself in a Nebula, the New Sony VAIO FW

Sony have been steadily rolling out a line of "signature collection" notebooks in recent times but it is the latest, New Sony VAIO Nebula FW that seems to have reviewers and retailers all hot under the collar. So what can be said about this new laptop? What have VAIO managed to produce here?

Sony have promised "out of this world design" with this model, this design goes beyond the stunning Nebula pattern on the case of the laptop, it carries through into the features and technology used within. The VAIO Nebula FW boasts an impressive 16.4 inch screen, perfect for viewing movies, images and of course web pages. In terms of processing power the Nebula has a number of Intel Core Duo processors within the range and a hefty 8GB of RAM. With a standard hard drive of around 500 GB and the option to upgrade to an SSD consumers are blessed with a multitude of different options.

The most impressive fact is that the VAIO Nebula FW comes with a Blu-ray drive as standard, meaning that you can watch all of your high definition movies whilst on the move. With its flashy design and obvious aesthetic appeal it is clear that Sony want to impress the casual computer user, however, with such a range of features and some impressive technology this is a notebook that combines form and function.
